Rhonni Boss-Moffitt & Faith Barnard enjoying the first Sedona/Verde Valley Tweet-Up Hosted by Red Rock TV16 & Los Abrigados Resort & Spa

The fourth Sedona Tweet-Up will be held on September 15th at the Marketplace Cafe in the Village of Oak Creek from 5:30-7 p.m., providing opportunities for Twitter networking while also raising money and collecting food donations for the Sedona Community Food Bank. Twitterers from Sedona, Flagstaff, Cottonwood and surrounding areas will gather to participate in the Tweet-up sponsored in part by Red Rock TV16, Hilton Sedona, Marketplace Cafe and Sedona Pies. This Tweet Up Fundraiser is part of the Food Bank Challenge to have one million donations made to local food banks on September 30, 2009.

When asked to describe what a “Tweet-Up” is, Creator of the Sedona/Verde Valley Tweet-Ups, Megan Aronson, says, “A Tweet-Up is a an opportunity for local business owners, publicists, Twitter members and those thinking about starting a Twitter account to meet and interact, learning more about each other’s businesses and how to support each other on Twitter. You get to put a face to the names of those you’re following and those who are following you back while meeting new people to start networking with as well. You’ll also find that Tweet-Ups present incredible opportunities to learn how to maximize your presence on Twitter, discover new Twitter tools and gain ideas and insights on how to promote your business through social networking.” But the tweetness doesn’t stop there! Attendees can also purchase raffle tickets to win fabulous prizes, including one of a kind art donated by local artists, Natural Wonders of Sedona DVDs from Red Rock TV16, gift certificates to local restaurants like the Hilton Sedona, Sedona pies and more.

The Marketplace Cafe is generously donating their Cafe for the gathering and will provide a cash bar for guests. For Twitterers traveling from afar to attend the event, the Hilton Sedona Resort has created a special overnight package and of course free internet to allow Twitter guests to tweet all about their stay. The package starts at $139 per suite. Contact 1.877.273.3762 for reservations.

Guest speakers Mari-lyn Hudson, Owner of Heart at Work and Megan Aronson, Director of Marketing and P.R. for Red Rock TV16 will offer an informative and insightful short presentation on “Creating Community Through Twitter.” Hudson and Aronson will present ideas on how to use Twitter to work together with other Sedona/Verde Vallery businesses to promote our area internationally, support each other’s businesses and use unified strategies to put Sedona on the Twitterverse map.

About The Marketplace Cafe

In 1997, when Michele and Jeff decided to open their restaurant, The Marketplace Café, in the Oak Creek Factory Outlet Mall in the village of Oak Creek, they successfully melded their respective East Coast and West Coast backgrounds and traditions to develop an extensive and eclectic menu. “We just talked about the types of foods we like, tested them out and also got suggestions from our guests,” said Michele. Jeff and Michele are also very accommodating when it comes to special requests by their guests. Fans of Twin Peaks will remember the cherry pie which was popular at the local restaurant. This was Jeff’s responsibility and is offered on the menu. Jeff was the Prop Master, after all. http://mpcsedona.com. Click here for a map to Marketplace Cafe.

The Sedona/Verde Valley Tweet-Ups take place regularly once a month at various locations around Sedona. Summer Fun in Sedona – 10 Ways to Cool Off in Sedona this Summer

Whether you’re bringing the whole family, looking for a romantic getaway or an adventure in the red rocks, head to Sedona for cool nights and fun days! We’ve got 10 ways for you to beat the heat and COOL OFF in Sedona during this HOT summer. And remember, its always cooler up here! We’re averaging 95-100 degrees right now in the sun. Head up Oak Creek Canyon and it gets even cooler. If you’re hot, just jump in the creek or a lovely swimming pool at your hotel/resort of choice to cool off.

#1 Take a Jeep Tour!

Try a famous Pink Jeep Tour up Schnebly Hill Rd. for mind-blowing red rock vistas or climb red rock stairs on four wheels on the Broken Arrow Tour. Sign up for Pink Jeep’s e-newsletter at http://www.pinkjeep.com/ and you’ll receive insider info on deals, discounts and coupons to save money on their tours.

Want a real western experience? Hop on a Red Rock Jeep if you want to ride with the Cowboys & Indians of the real “out west.” You don’t have to wear your silver spurs or cowboy hat – just come ready to have fun!

#2 See the red rocks from above – there’s no better way to see Sedona!

Sky Safari Helicopter & Biplane Rides take you up above Sedona where you come literally come eye to eye with the highest peaks and the lowest valleys of our scenic Red Rock Country. You will be in awe the entire time. I’ve actually flown in a Red Rock Biplane and I really mean it when I say you haven’t seen Sedona ’til you’ve seen it from the sky!

#3 Rent a scooter and explore Sedona!
Sedona’s going green! Save gas, save money and save the environment. There’s is no Driver’s License required to ride an electric bicycle so this is fun for the entire family! If you want more speed there is no better way to enjoy the magnificent red rock scenery than on a Vetrix Maxi-Scooter. You’ll experience more on a Vetrix Maxi Scooter. It rides like a motorcycle with a top speed of 62mph, acceleration from 0 to 50 in just 6.8 seconds. Stop by The Electric Toy Store to take your pick of fun electric toys!
#4 Go WILD at Out of Africa Wildlife Park
Ride into the Serenghetti to feed giraffes, zebras, ostriches, wildebeests & more or enjoy their famous Tiger Splash show where the park’s prize tigers play with their Trainers jumping into the pool. You’ve never seen anything like it.
Pick up a free copy of Kudos – they usually have a coupon in there for $2 off admission.
#5 Tee off at one of the most spectacular golf courses in America, Oak Creek Country Club.
You’ll have a hard time keeping your eye on the ball golfing this magnificent award-winning course. When you’re done, enjoy lunch at Mulligan’s Grille on the Greene overlooking a beautiful pond. They’ve got “gourmet comfort food” that the locals rave about.
This par 72, 18 hole championship golf course was designed by the famous father and son team of Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Robert Trent Jones Jr., masterfully arranged in the grandeur of red rock splendor. The course consists of 145 acres, including three lakes.

#6 Head up Oak Creek Canyon to Slide Rock State Park & Grasshopper Point to cool off by Oak Creek.
Slide Rock State Park is by far one of Sedona’s most popular attractions. Who needs a water park when you can slip and slide down a natural red rock waterslide carved into Oak Creek? Do some cliff-diving into beautiful pools of water, sunbathe on a bed of red rocks. Ah, that is the life!
If you’re a little more adventurous, stop at Grasshopper Point and climb your way up to some brave and bold cliff-diving into a deep pool below.
When you’re done, cast out a line and fish for some fresh local trout creekside or at the Rainbow Trout Farm. At the Trout Farm, you’re guaranteed to catch one and then you can even cook it right then and there! The whole family can enjoy a picnic in this magical setting, tasting the fruits of your labor. Now that’s FRESH fish!
#7 Experience the Real “Out West”!
Go on a horseback ride through the real desert of Arizona and finish it off with an authentic cowboy cookout at a real working cattle ranch, M Diamond Ranch. Cowboys serenade you by starlight – this is one to write home about!
#8 1st Friday Evening at the Galleries
On the first Friday of every month, the Sedona Gallery Association hosts the “First Friday Evening in the Galleries” event with artists receptions, wine and hors deourves at Sedona’s finest art galleries. Mix and mingle with your favorite artists learning more about their inspiration and artistic process.
For more information go to http://www.sedonagalleryassociation.com/.
#9 Hike the Red Rocks!
Bell Rock Trail and West Fork Trail
I recommend you do this hike at sunset when it cools off and you can witness a spectacular Arizona sunset from the top of the bell. Wildflowers line Scenic Highway 179 leading to this easy hike where you’ll get up close and personal with one of Sedona’s most unique and well-known rock formations.
Our favorite Sedona hike is by far the Westfork Trail in Oak Creek Canyon. About halfway up the Canyon to Flagstaff, this mellow little hike criss-crosses Oak Creek for a total of 11 miles. The first 3 are a great “out and back” as you walk at the bottom of towering red rock cliffs,
hopping stones to cross the creek back and forth, back and forth. Kick off your shoes and dip your feet in to cool off. If you’re more adventurous, continue past the 3 mile point and you’ll feel like you’re the only human on the planet discovering “The Call of the Canyon” for the very first time.
#10 Day Trips Around the State
Sedona is centrally located within driving distance to the Grand Canyon, Jerome, Prescott, Flagstaff, many ancient ruins, State Parks and historical landmarks. Pack up the car and travel to Montezuma’s Castle & Montezuma’s Well (30 min. from Sedona) to get a real sense of this region’s original settlers. Don’t miss the Grand Canyon (1.5-2 hrs from Sedona), of course, and on the way stop to explore the famous Route 66 through Flagstaff (30-45 min. from Sedona). Jerome (30 min. from Sedona) was once a booming copper-mining town, now its a quaint hillside town where you’ll discover unique art galleries, shops and restaurants like The Haunted Hamburger. Prescott or “Preskitt” as we locals call it was the original capitol of Arizona, home to plenty of Arizona history.

Sedona Soul Adventures' "Bali Sacred Spirit" Journey 9/19 – 10/2

Sedona Soul Adventures’ “Bali Sacred Spirit” Journey
September 19 to October 2, 2009
Last Chance to Join this Remarkable Journey!
From Owners Tom & Debra Margrave:
Our Bali Sacred Spirit journey is coming up soon, but there is still time for you to join us – IF – you act now! What will you experience on the Bali Sacred Spirit Tour? Well, here is an overview:

First, prepare yourself for a thoroughly life-changing journey. You will be part of a small group of like-minded seekers and open-hearted spiritual adventurers who bond quickly and deeply as we travel to ancient temples, meditate, explore, play, shop, eat, dance and celebrate.

You will find that Bali is not only a place of immense physical beauty – lush and green and tropical – but Bali also has a vibrant, dynamic culture filled with artistry and creative expression as well as a profoundly devotional spirituality. As you discover the beauty of the island’s temples, its people and its landscapes; as you are immersed in a culture where awareness of, and devotion to Spirit permeates every aspect of life, you may very well experience subtle but powerful shifts in your own awareness and relationship to the Divine.

During your stay, as you resonate with Bali more and more, you will find yourself slowing down, relaxing, opening and unwinding. You will experience yourself spontaneously entraining to the more natural Balinese rhythms and pace of life. You may even give yourself permission to indulge in the pampering and sensual pleasures of the many heavenly little spas set amidst the tranquility of rice paddies and fields. Where else but in Bali are massage, pedicures and manicures, body wraps and facials taken to the level of an art form?

You will be amazed and delighted with what you experience during your time in Bali. You will come home with a deep appreciation for the people, the culture and the land. You will find a deeper appreciation for yourself as you realize that Balil has subtly but deeply opened you to a new and more lovingly alive version of yourself.

“This sacred journey to Bali with Tom & Debra was magical. Their preparations allowed me to “drink in” the essence of the Hindu temples and the “feel” of the Balinese culture and surroundings. Nirvana has followed me home.”

Namaste

Canyon Lands Art Exhibit and Demonstrations at Sedona Arts Center

SEDONA, Ariz. (July 29, 2009)

Beat the heat on First Friday with an evening of poetry and fine art, starting at 4:00pm in the Sculpture Garden. After an hour of delightful poetry, move inside for the opening reception of the Arts Center’s new August Exhibit, Canyon Lands. The exhibit features four local artists who have captured the flavor and beauty of Northern Arizona: Susan Kliewer, sculptor and painter, David Haskell, plein-air oil painter, Mariann Leahy, clay artist, and Richard Daley, photographer. The show opens with the reception on Friday and runs through September 2nd. Open daily from 10am to 5pm.

At 6:00pm the winner of the People’s Choice Award from the 2009 Members Open Exhibition will be announced. Ballots were cast throughout the entire show, which ran from July 3 to August 5th. The winning piece will be on display through the month of August.

Susan Kliewer is a native of Southern California, but has made Arizona her home for almost 40 years. She spent five of those years at Marble Canyon Trading Post in a remote area of Northern Arizona, adjacent to the Navajo Reservation. A painter since the age of ten, Susan turned to sculpting in 1987, after working in an art casting foundry for ten years. Susan often uses her Native American friends and relatives as models to capture that special intimacy which is a hallmark of her work.

In 1993 Susan won a competition to create a monument of Sedona Schnebly. The ten-foot high sculpture was installed in front of the Sedona Library. Since then, many more monuments have been commissioned and installed in the United States and Europe. Susan is currently working on twelve two-thirds, life-sized sculptures for the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Park on Kauai, Hawaii depicting a Navajo family settlement.

David Haskell, another California native who has made Sedona his home, began painting in oils at an early age. Although he worked his way through college as an illustrator, he chose a career in resource management with the National Park Service. He painted occasionally on commission until he retired from the NPS in 1999. Since then he has been painting full time.

Although best known for his dynamic paintings of the Grand Canyon, Sedona and Monument Valley, he takes frequent painting expeditions to other locations including the Rocky Mountains and the central California coast. He states, “My paintings are the result of experiences in the field that have inspired my sense of awe and appreciation for the incredible beauty of the Western landscape. I am particularly drawn to moving water and the power of vast open spaces.”

Mariann Leahy, was born in Chicago, but has lived in Sedona for 10 years. She is a talented clay artist who is inspired by myths and symbols that depict the emergence and mystery of life’s energy. Her works, a blend of human and animal motifs, combine artistic experience with profound respect for nature and images from the past. With clay as her medium of choice, she has a natural tactile connection with the earth.

After researching stories that have been influenced by the rich cultural traditions and ruins located throughout the Southwest, Mariann draws the stories in glaze on fired clay. Each piece is then painted with many additional coats of glaze, which bring alive the brilliant colors during the second firing process. Her hand-built pieces echo ancient motifs in a contemporary style.

Richard Daley is an award-wining fine art photographer living in Sedona, Arizona. His landscape and nature photography is strongly influenced by the elements of design using line and form, light and shadow, complementary and contrasting color. He uses the principles of Zen in much of his nature photography to capture the essence of the subject, celebrate the ordinary, and invite the viewer to a deeper relationship with nature.

The work of each of these fine artists will draw you into a different experience of the Canyon Lands – with a view of this corner of the world through their eyes that has been captured on canvas, on film, in bronze and in clay. The artists will be providing free demonstrations during the month of August. Call for dates and times.

The reception runs from 5:00 to 8:00pm – no admission. Everyone is invited to enjoy the art and to meet and mingle with the artists. It will be an evening well worth the effort. The Sedona Arts Center is located at the north end of Uptown Sedona, on the left just before entering Oak Creek Canyon. For more information, please call the Gallery at 928-282-3865, the Administrative Office 928-282-3809, or visit our Website at http://www.sedonaartscenter.com/

Sedona Events: Chamber Music Sedona Presents Acclaimed Piano Duo Valentina Lisitsa & Alexei Kuznetsoff 5/24

Musical Memorial Day Holiday In Sedona May 24

The sounds of world-class music will resound Memorial Day weekend in Sedona, welcoming visitors and residents alike, when internationally acclaimed pianist Valentina Lisitsa returns to Sedona for a 2:30pm concert Sunday, May 24 together with husband Alexei Kuznetsoff following their postponed Chamber Music Sedona performance March 15 when Ms. Lisitsa was invited to perform the Beethoven Emperor Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, stepping in for Helene Grimaud March 13, 14 and 15.

Ms. Lisitsa first appeared in Sedona in October 2007 with violinist Hilary Hahn. It was this association with Hahn at a March 2009 Chicago Symphony Orchestra Recital series concert that Ms. Lisitsa was invited to make her CSO debut. The May 24 program will include music by Debussy, Schubert, Brahms and Beethoven.
This brilliant young piano-duo from Ukraine came to the United States with an impressive list of competition prizes to its credit and is winning critical acclaim in the U.S. as gifted artists making a genuine contribution to the marvelous but, seldom-heard literature for two pianos. By the time Valentina and Alexei met at the Kiev Conservatory, they were both winners of numerous international, national and local solo and chamber music competitions. In 1990, after only a few weeks of preparation, Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff captured the first prize at the Ukrainian Chamber Music Competition.
In a recent review, The Dallas Morning News said, “Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff’s playing is all the grapevine said it was — miraculous. It is not simply that their ensemble skills are so uncommon; more to the point, these two bright, attractive performers manage to react as one while maintaining a flexibility of phrase and a freedom of gait commanded by few other duo-pianists.”
A pre-concert talk will take place from 1:15-1:55pm by Coconino Community College Music Instructor and pianist Chase Coleman in the Don Bosco Room at St. John Vianney Church immediately before the concert. Call 928.204.2415 for more information or visit http://chambermusicsedona.org/descriptions.htm for more information.
Ms. Lisitsa and Mr. Kuznetsoff will give a master class immediately following the concert for Northern Arizona pianists who have participated in the Quick-Bowman Piano Competition, held annually for eighteen years.

First Friday at Sedona Arts Center Kicks Off 4th Annual Sedona Pin-up Show May 1st

First Friday at Sedona Arts Center
Beauty of Light Exhibit, Talented Poets, Pin-up Show

SEDONA, AZ. (April 22, 2008): Mark your calendars for the Sedona Arts Center’s First Friday Activities on May 1st, 5 – 8pm. The evening opens at 4:00pm for an hour of poetry at Poets Corner. Enjoy the return of two audience favorites: KC Baker from San Francisco and Amy Mae Calhoun from Prescott. Opening for them will be Lynn Heil from Sedona who will be reading his poetry publicly for the first time. Poets Corner performances will be followed by opening receptions from 5 – 8pm for the Center’s two new exhibits. Join us for evening of art and fun! Everyone is invited – no admission for the events.

The Fine Art Gallery’s May exhibit, “Beauty of Light,” is one that you do not want to miss. The show features the unique works of four talented member artists: Marlys K. Mallet and Michael Redhawk with their captivating Unison Series, amazing art quilts by Jane Defoe, beautiful ceramic art by Dennis Ott, and exquisite jewelry by Michael Redhawk. The exhibit will run through June 3rd ~ open daily from 10am – 5pm.

The 4th Annual Sedona Pin-Up Show, located in the Community Gallery, is a celebration of art in the raw – ready for you to find those pieces you cannot live without – and later enjoy the experience of choosing the matting and frames that will harmonize perfectly with your home or office decor. This could be the opportunity of a lifetime to buy a piece created by a local well-known artist or possibly one yet undiscovered at a very reasonable price. Everything in the show will be priced from $50 to $500 – something is bound to catch your eye – and match your pocketbook! This unusual and exciting exhibition runs for only three days! It opens with the reception on Friday, May 1st from 5 – 8pm and continues on Saturday, May 2nd and Sunday, May 3rd from 10am – 5pm.

The Annual Pinup Show was organized four years ago to attract a wide variety of artists from all around the area. The show is unusual for Sedona and the Arts Center because it is non-juried and open to all artists of any level from Yavapai and Coconino Counties – including children.

Begin the evening with the Poetry Readings in the Sculpture Garden, join the revelry and buying frenzy at the 4th Annual Pin-up Show in the Community Gallery, and bask in the beauty of the unique creations by the featured artists in the Fine Art Gallery.

The Sedona Arts Center is located at State Route 89A & Art Barn Road in uptown Sedona. The Galleries are open daily from 10-5. For more information call 928-282-3809 or visit http://www.sedonaartscenter.com/.
