Red Rock Fantasy at Los Abrigados Resort & Spa, Nov. 19 – Jan. 2, 2010

One of the city’s most spectucular annual events is the Red Rock Fantasy at Los Abrigados Resort & Spa. Now in its nineteenth year and boasting nearly two-dozen displays created by families from the Southwest, the festival promises never-before-seen marvels of light that leave children in wonderment and move adult minds to enjoy the holidays as they did when they were young. That’s the magic that has made Red Rock Fantasy a favorite among Arizonans and visitors to the state alike.

Lights On for the 19th Annual Red Rock Fantasy will take place this year at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2009. The event will last through the New Year, ending with “Lights Out” on Saturday, January 2, 2010.

All those touring the lights will be given a ballot containing a route map, which will allow them to choose five favorite displays. The completed ballots may be dropped in the ballot box located in the lobby of the restaurants. The winning display will be awarded a lifetime vacation ownership through ILX Premiere Vacation Club with prizes also going to runners up in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place categories. The Red Rock Fantasy Awards Banquet announcing the winners in every category is Saturday, January 9, 2010 beginning at 6:30 pm. In addition to the annual competition amongst display decorators, ILX Resorts Incorporated will continue the tradition of donating a percentage of proceeds to local schools, charities and nonprofits.

ILX Resorts wants to thank the Sedona Chamber of Commerce and City of Sedona for pledged safety during this year’s annual event. It is because of them Red Rock Fantasy has been and continues to be a success.

The Festival of Lights at Tlaquepaque, Dec. 12

It’s hard to describe what it feels like to be in the midst of 6,000 golden-hued luminarias that punctuate every wall, balcony, patio and cobbled stone walkway in the arts village. If ever there was a place for bedazzlement and holiday wonder, the 36th Annual Festival of Lights at Tlaquepaque is it.

Everyone — the young, young at heart and revelers everywhere — is invited to the holiday celebration on Saturday, December 12th, 2009 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. Admission is free, as is the Sedona Trolley service from the uptown Municipal parking lot to Tlaquepaque, available throughout the festival hours.

For many the lighting of a luminaria has a special significance. Now a Tlaquepaque tradition for six years, cancer survivors are honored and those that lost their lives to cancer are remembered as friends and families dedicate a luminaria in their name. Donations to help fight the disease are gratefully accepted by the American Cancer Society. The sponsored luminarias will their special messages are then placed around the fountain at Patio del Norte. “This can be a challenging time of year for many families. We want to especially remember those that are heroically fighting cancer or who overcame it… as well as those who did not. In a small way we pause to acknowledge them at this special time of year,” said Wendy Lippman, general manager and managing partner of Tlaquepaque.

At 5:00 pm candles will be handed out to everyone. Kids, parents grandparents and visitors from all over love to light their candles and place them in the luminaria bags. Not long after, the stunning spectacle of light, over 6000 luminarias is complete.

The weekend event will kick off the night before with popular singer Ron Tolson whose deeply melodic baritone voice will fill the Tlaquepaque Chapel on Friday, December 11th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.

On Saturday starting at 3:00 pm gather the kids in Patio Del Norte to see the arrival of Santa Claus and his elf, accompanied by Christmas favorites sung by Sedona’s Tom and Shondra. The Chavez Jazz Trio with Frankie Chavez, accomplished drummer and percussionist, will perform from 5:30 to 8pm in Patio Del Norte.

At Plaza de la Fuente from 5:30 to 8:00 pm listen to the heart-pounding, uplifting vocals and perfect harmonies of the 60-person River of Life Tabernacle Choir. Astounding in their mastery of song, their repertoire is both traditionally seasonal and inspiring gospel.

Traditional Christmas music delivered with the upbeat sounds of steel drums, marimba and more by percussionist Paul McDermand will thrill the crowds in Patio de las Campanas from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. At the Chapel from 4:00 to 5:30 pm be sure not to miss Sedona’s Jim Buchanan and stay for the Leman Music Ensemble from 6-8pm, performing traditional Christmas favorites.

It wouldn’t be a traditional Tlaquepaque event without the Roaming Mariachis Familia Rojas – a big hit from the Fiesta, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Carolers will stroll throughout the village during the afternoon to round out the holiday cheer.

Home to more than 40 shops and galleries and four restaurants, Tlaquepaque, the Art and Soul of Sedona, now in its 37th year, is located at 336 Highway 179 at the Oak Creek Bridge just south of 89A on Highway 179. This up and coming designer has won several awards since her debut four years ago. Pamela has an innovative way of combining 18K white, rose, yellow, and somtimes green gold into one piece. Her jewelry is finished with a special hand hammering technique she calls ‘Crushed’.

The “Pamela Froman Fine Jewelry Collection” features handmade pieces comprised of a mixture of colored precious metals and exquisite, rare natural stones. Originality and meticulous attention to every detail are hallmarks of Pamela’s signature look; because each item is handmade, no two will ever be identical, even if they are similar in design. This one-of-a-kind, limited edition jewelry is as hip as it is timeless, transcending every generation and age, and specially crafted so that it may be treasured for years to come.

William Henry studio started to make knives about 12 years ago.

November 1st, 2009 (Sedona, AZ) – On Saturday, November 7th, children, parents, grandparents and champions for children will stroll across the country and here in Sedona as part of a grass roots effort The Champions for Children’s Health Stroller Brigade. On November 4th, the first Stroller Brigade will storm the nation’s capitol with a series of nationwide brigades to follow throughout the weekend. Hundreds of thousands of “Champions for Children” will stroll simultaneously in numerous cities across the country to make their voices heard for all of America’s children. This nationwide event, coordinated by the Children’s Defense Fund, has received national publicity. Organizers hope to send a strong and clear message to Congress and President Obama that real health reform for children means accessible, affordable and comprehensive health coverage for all children—no matter where they live.

Congress is currently debating health reform legislation that could leave millions of children worse rather than better of and fails to fix bureaucratic, unfair barriers to care. The CDF mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. CDF provides a strong, effective and independent voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby or speak for themselves.

Although there is a strong safety net for children in this country, which includes Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), millions of children are consistently falling through the cracks. The health care system for children desperately needs to be strengthened and simplified. There are more than 8 million uninsured children in America – that’s one in ten. More than 2,200 children are born uninsured every day. Millions of families are losing employer-based coverage, struggling to afford health insurance premiums, or facing medical bills they can’t pay. Currently, two-thirds of uninsured children are eligible but complicated enrollment processes are slowing down the progress towards healthier children.

CDF is working with several national partners and has convened hundreds of groups and secured endorsements from almost 1,300 organizations representing more than 60 million people throughout the United States to champion principles for children and pregnant women. Guarantee every child and pregnant woman comprehensive health and mental health coverage this year – join the Sedona Stroller Brigade or go to www.childrensdefensefund.org right now and click on “Take Action” to send a letter to your Congressman or Congresswoman showing your support of our nation’s children.

The Sedona Stroller Brigade will begin at Sunset Park, located at 205 Sunset Dr., at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 7th. Please join your community members in showing support for children’s health – you don’t have to have a stroller or a child to participate! Supporters will meet at Sunset Park at 10:30 am and stroll at 11 a.m. to the intersection of Highway 89A and Sunset Drive then down to the intersection of 89a and Shelby Drive. Please bring family, friends, strollers, & walking shoes. You may also bring a sign to carry with a message personal to you. For more information please call Jessica Wrubel at 928-300-9684, visit http://www.sedonastrollerbrigade.wordpress.com or http://www.childrensdefensefund.org.

Good Karma Construction ~ Building a Blueprint for Ecological and Self-Sustainable Living!

A Sacred Site that promises to be a stunning showpiece of ecological and self-sustaining living for the future is currently being built in Northern California by a non-profit charitable organization based here in Sedona at the Buddha Maitreya Shambhala Meditation Center, Hillside.

The Project is called “The Church of Shambhala Vajradhara Maitreya Sangha Monastery & Soul Therapy Retreat Center”. It is being built in a pristine, secluded area of great natural beauty, on an old volcanic mountain in Lake County. It overlooks Clearlake the oldest natural lake in North America and the 2nd oldest lake in the world.

The construction consists of a central 51⁰ white pyramid with capstone and six surrounding ‘monolithic’ domes creating a sacred geometric form as seen throughout nature and holy sites across the globe. Each of the surrounding domes is enclosed within a 51⁰ pyramid individually making not only the center pyramid but also all six domes into pyramids – the most powerful structure for meditation and self-realization. The project is designed to be a prototype of advanced, ecological living and sacred geomantic design. It is a sacred site for personal and planetary healing – blessing the land to heal the nations – and its unique, earth-friendly architectural design is built to last 1000 years.

The complex will incorporate solar and wind technology (4 wind turbines are already functioning), recycling and water conservation principles, hybrid and electric transportation, along with aquaponic and organic food cultivation, and the practice of right exercise and diet as an example of healthy balanced lifestyle.

The main features of the monastery are:

It is designed and built according to sacred geomancy as found in all temples, churches, stupas and holy sites.

There is a central 51 degree pyramid surrounded by 6 monolithic domes, for a 1000 year lifespan.

Energy efficiency will be attained through solar, wind, geothermal power, and electric vehicles.

Self-sustaining living through the use of aquaponics and hydroponics.

Open by appointment for day visits and extended meditation healing ‘Soul Therapy®’ retreats.

To raise funds for this $2.25 million project which is currently one-third complete, the center is hosting a “Divine Wine and Good Karma” fundraising event on November 7th. This promises to be a high-profile event with support from many local businesses and sponsors. Guests will be able to sample wonderful wines and mouth watering gourmet hors d’oeuvres, along with the carving of a special cake – an exact replica of the monastery illustrating the beauty of its unique architecture – created by Master Executive Chef Mike McCray of “Mikes Amazing Cakes”.

The evening will also offer an opportunity to experience the soulful Meditation Healing tools, learn about the monastery project, and bid for awesome prizes such as a jeep tour, hot air balloon ride, spa treatments, a Montana ranch weekend get-away and much more!

Join us at the Sedona Community Center at 2615 Melody Lane, West Sedona from 7pm – 10pm, Saturday November 7th for this purposeful and memorable fundraising night. Call (928) 239-4409 to reserve your space – you won’t want to miss it!

5thAnnual Sedona Plein Air Festival 2009

SEDONA, Ariz. (October 15, 2009): The cool weather has arrived, the leaves are turning and thirty-two nationally-recognized plein-air artists will soon begin to paint the mystical beauty of Sedona. The spell has been cast and magic abounds.

The 5th Annual Plein Air Festival, hosted by the Sedona Arts Center and the presenting sponsor, L’Auberge de Sedona, will still your hearts and stimulate your imagination for nine full days, beginning Oct 24 through Nov 1.

The festival provides something for everyone! Visitors and residents alike are invited to watch the artists transfer their vision of the beauty that surrounds them onto canvas or paper ~ capturing magical moments in time right before your eyes.

Sedona is a plein-air artist’s paradise with its abundance of picturesque scenes and exquisite landscapes. The ever-changing light, shadows and colors in late October, make the setting almost perfect.

The art form is not easy. Painting out-of-doors, from life, requires stamina and the ability to stay focused and completely absorbed in the work regardless of the shifting elements. The award-winning artists from around the country will spend six days painting in a variety of media to capture the unique scenes of Sedona, Jerome, Oak Creek, and the surrounding area, followed by weekend events that present the body of work created by the artists earlier in the week.

Join the excitement by watching the artists in the creative process. Four events have been planned for this purpose: Saturday, Oct 24, enjoy the Paint-out on Main Street from 2:30 – 5:00pm, sponsored by Sedona Main Street Program. Tuesday morning (7:00am), Oct 27, you will find some of the artists painting the scenes and landscape around the Sedona Heritage Museum. All day Wednesday, Oct 28, Jerome Chamber of Commerce and Jerome ArtWalk will host the artists as they paint Historic Jerome.

"Tranquil" by Clark Mitchell - Winner, Collector's Choice 2008

Then, begin the weekend on Friday morning Creekside at L’Auberge de Sedona, the Festival’s generous presenting sponsor. The artists will create paintings from start to finish in just two hours. The unique Quick Draw event, starts at exactly 10am and ends at Noon. Trolley service will be available from the Uptown City Parking Lot on Jordan and Schnebly Road.

For those who want to be more personally involved and actively participate, there are events designed especially for you. Learn about plein-air painting from the artists, or try your hand at “painting from life.”

Monday through Thursday (11am – 1pm) lunchtime lectures/demonstrations by one of the participating festival artist are offered ~ and ~ four free plein-air painting classes (two sessions each/$25 materials fee) are available. Space is limited and reservations are recommended for both the lectures and the classes (call 928-282-3809). For details and a complete schedule visit the Festival Website: www.SedonaPleinAirFestival.com.

For those who love to rub shoulders with the artists in an informal, social setting, two receptions will be held: Monday evening (6:30 – 8:00), October 26, the Arts Center will host an Opening Reception for the Artists Showcase Exhibit in the Community Gallery, presenting prior works of the 32 participating artists.

A mid-week highlight, Wednesday evening (7:00 – 8:30pm), there will be a presentation by special guest speaker, Wm Scott Jennings, a national-recognized master plein-air artist, will discuss his process in a lecture titled, Plein Air to Studio. The presentation will be followed by a wine reception in the Theatre Studio at the Arts Center.

A celebration of Oak Creek’s agricultural and farming history, the Slide Rock Apple Fest is a two-day event with live music, activities for children and adults, food, arts & crafts, natural exhibitions, educational booths, homesteading demonstrations and lectures about sustainability. The Apple Festival activities will include apple-sorting demonstrations, cornhole and a beer garden, face painting, children’s arts & crafts, apple-themed activities, history walks, live demonstrations, an apple cooking contest (see below), a dessert auction and music including performances by Red Rock Country Band and Porchlights. A Plein Air “Paint Out” will also take place at the event.

Slide Rock State Park, originally the Pendley Homestead, is a 43-acre historical apple farm located in Oak Creek Canyon. Frank L. Pendley, having arrived in the canyon in 1907, formally acquired the land under the Homestead Act in 1910. Due to his pioneering innovation, he succeeded where others failed by establishing a unique irrigation system still in use by the park today. This allowed Pendley to plant his first apple orchard in 1912, beginning the pattern of agricultural development that has dominated the site since that time.

The park is named after the famous Slide Rock, a stretch of slippery creek bottom adjacent to the homestead. Visitors may slide down a slick natural water chute or wade and sun along the creek. The swim area is located on National Forest land which is jointly managed by Arizona State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service. Together these areas have seen the making of many Hollywood movies such as “Broken Arrow” (1950) with James Stewart, “Drum Beat” (1954) with Alan Ladd and Charles Bronson, “Gun Fury” (1953) with Rock Hudson and Donna Reed, and a scene from “Angel and the Badman” (1946) with John Wayne.

The evening will be cool, the poets will be entertaining and the works of four outstanding artists will be exciting this First Friday September 4th at the Sedona Arts Center. Arrive at 4:00 pm for a delightful hour at Poets Corner in the Sculpture Garden and stay for the wine reception in the Fine Art Gallery. The Sedona Arts Center’s new September Exhibit, Nature’s Spirit, runs through September 30th, and features a wonderful mix of artists depicting the essence of nature through their unique mediums ~ Dorisanne Soyka (Gourd Art), Patricia Steele (Colored Pencils), Dawn Sutherland (Oils), and Shane McDermott (Photography).

Dorisanne Soyka was an executive secretary in Southern California for over 20 years before leaving the corporate world in 1993 to get in touch with her artistic soul. After experimenting in various media, she discovered gourds as an art form, which was an inspirational awakening. She was instantly caught up in a spiritual connection between gourds and nature and herself….a mystical connection that continues to appeal and inspire her today. Each gourd has a story to tell and guides Dorisanne in her choice of techniques to apply, whether it is painting, staining, wood burning, weaving, or all of the above! The results are whispered messages to the viewer from nature’s spirit.

Patricia Steele is a native of Michigan and moved to Arizona in the early 1970s to earn a Fine Arts Degree from Arizona State University. After working for many years as an advertising and commercial photographer, she turned her attention to nature and portrait photography. She began exploring national parks and wildlife refuges with her camera. In recent years, she has developed a passion for creating realistic and compelling likenesses of wildlife, such as bobcat, coyote, and Gambles quail - frequent visitors to her backyard in Scottsdale - always working in her favorite medium, colored pencils. Her drawings definitely have a voice of their own.

Dawn Sutherland grew up on a farm in northern Wisconsin where she developed a deep appreciation of the natural environment at an early age. A teacher and counselor most of her adult life, Dawn first began painting in 2001. Through dedicated study, she learned to communicate her love of the natural environment through oil painting. Dawn moved to Cottonwood in 2003 and has continued to refine her skills by taking classes with noted landscape painters. She particularly enjoys painting “en plein air” and is known for her exceptional ability to capture light within the shadows, providing the viewer with a sense of being in the space, and communicating the warmth and solidity of the rocks and landforms.

Shane is an award-winning nature photographer residing in Flagstaff, Arizona. His fascination with nature and particularly wildlife began at the early age of four - hours were spent drawing animals. His attraction and wonder for nature never diminished, however his means of expressing and sharing his love for it didn’t blossom until he discovered photography. The art of photographic conservation and education are now the primary driving force behind Shane’s creative visions. Through a unique combination of artistry, patience and an astonishing capacity to envision and capture the natural world on film, Shane’s images quickly attract the attention and imagination of all who view them.

Meet the artists one-on-one and enjoy free demonstrations throughout the month as each works in her medium of choice. Dorisanne ~ Sept 11th (1 to 4 pm); Patricia Steele ~ Sept 12th; 18th (11 am to 2pm); Dawn Sutherland ~ Sept 16th, 20th & 30th (1 to 3pm).

The First Friday event starts with poetry from 4:00 to 5:00pm followed by an artist reception from 5:00 to 8:00pm – no admission. Everyone is invited! It is a lovely way to spend the evening.
